The Real Difference Between a Pool Leak and Evaporation

Every pool owner notices the water level dropping over time. But is it just evaporation, or do you have a leak that could cost you hundreds of gallons—and big bucks—if left unchecked? Here’s how to distinguish between natural water loss and a breach in your pool’s shell.

Understanding Evaporation

On a hot, dry day, a typical backyard pool can lose up to ¼ inch of water per day to evaporation. Factors like sun exposure, wind, and humidity accelerate this process. To estimate evaporation loss for your region, fill a straight‐sided container and measure water drop over a week—it should match your pool’s drop if evaporation is the only cause.

Signs of a Leak

Leaks are often more dramatic. If your water level drops beyond ½ inch per day, or you see unexplained damp patches, mud where none existed, or sudden drops that restart after you refill, you likely have a leak. Check around skimmer boxes, pump seals, light niches, and the tile line for wet spots.

The Bucket Test

This simple at-home test helps confirm evaporation vs. leak: place a five-gallon bucket on the pool step, fill it to match pool water level, and mark both inside and outside water levels. After 24 hours, compare drops. If the pool level has fallen significantly more than the bucket, you have a leak.

Common Leak Locations

Leaks often occur at skimmer gaskets, return lines, or equipment fittings. Underground plumbing leaks can saturate soil around the pool, so look for lush patches of grass or sinkholes. Surface cracks in plaster or tile grout can also let water escape slowly over months.

When to Call a Pro

If your DIY tests point to a leak—but you can’t find it—call a professional. Leak detection equipment locates even the smallest breaches without unnecessary digging. Left unchecked, leaks can undermine pool structure and blow out finish materials.
